Dracaena reflexa ‘Song of India’
Dracaena reflexa ‘Song of India’ is a popular indoor plant known for its vibrant, variegated leaves. The long, narrow leaves are edged with bright yellow, creating a striking contrast against the deep green centres. The plant has a bushy, upright growth habit, with its arching branches giving it a graceful, layered appearance over time. ‘Song of India’ is relatively slow-growing.
Native to: Dracaena reflexa is native to Madagascar, Mauritius, and other islands in the Indian Ocean. In its natural habitat, it grows as an understory plant in tropical forests, which influences its preference for moderate light and high humidity.
Water: Dracaena ‘Song of India’ prefers its soil to be kept evenly moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, ensuring the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering can cause the leaf tips to brown. During the winter months, reduce watering as the plant’s growth slows.
Light: This plant thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, leading to browning or fading of the yellow edges. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but the variegation may become less pronounced. An east or west-facing window is ideal.
Humidity: Dracaena ‘Song of India’ prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally between 40% and 60%. While it can adapt to typical indoor humidity levels, increasing the humidity through regular misting or using a pebble tray can help maintain its lush appearance and prevent leaf tips from drying out.
Temperature: This plant does well in typical indoor temperatures ranging from 18°C to 24°C. It should be kept away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, as these can cause stress. Avoid placing it near heating vents or air conditioners, as extreme temperatures can damage the leaves.
